Vermont Fire Station Feeling Heat of The Labor Shortage

December 1, 2021

How is the current labor shortage in the United States affecting fire departments?

It resulted in a fire station in Williston, Vermont being unstaffed for about an hour a few weeks ago, as VT Digger reports; that’s because the station didn’t have the workers available to fill it. The station had three firefighters on duty, and they all had to help with a medical transfer during that time. The station then turned to its on-call firefighters to see if anyone could help fill the void, but none of them responded.

If there were a fire or another emergency during that time, the fire department would not have had the staffing necessary to respond.
