Republican Running In New Bedford City Council Special Election

January 16, 2023

New Bedford needs to fill its Ward 3 city council seat.

To do so, the city plans to hold a preliminary election on January 24 and a runoff election on February 28.

The winner of the election will fill the remainder of Hugh Dunn’s term; Dunn, an attorney who works in Boston, resigned in December 2022 to focus on his career. Dunn was not enrolled in a political party.

Seven people are running in the race to succeed Dunn in the city council, according to South Coast Today.

The candidates are:  Carmen Amaral, Robert C. Bromley, Robert Cabral, Kathy M. Dehner, Shawn Oliver, John F. Robinson Jr., and Jacob J. Ventura.

Ventura is the lone Republican of the bunch, according to the New Bedford Light., which calls Ward 3 “the city’s sleepiest ward politically.”

The top-two finishers in the preliminary round will advance to the runoff election.

Whoever wins the election will have to seek re-election in 2023 if the candidate wants to serve a full term.
