Chris Sununu Critiques ‘Pro-Life’ Governors For Not Pushing To Ban Abortion

February 22, 2023

New Hampshire governor and potential 2024 presidential candidate Chris Sununu took a swipe at some other potential 2024 presidential candidates.

Sununu said that while he openly supports legal abortion, the 2024 GOP presidential primary will likely include some people who call themselves pro-life, but did not try to ban abortion when they had the chance.

“Either you’re pro-abortion, you’re pro-life, or you’re — like most of us — somewhere in the middle,” Sununu told The New York Times. “What are these other governors going to do when they stand on a stage and say, ‘I’m pro-life’? But you didn’t ban it. You didn’t even try. Are you really?”

The remark may have been a dig at Florida Governor Ron DeSantis. Although DeSantis publicly identifies as pro-life, abortion is legal up until 15 weeks in Florida and DeSantis is not actively pushing to ban abortion in the state, despite Republicans holding majorities in both chambers of the state legislature.

During a debate with his Democratic challenger on October 24, 2022, DeSantis said:  “I’m proud of the 15 weeks that we did.”

DeSantis has not said publicly if he would go further.

The vast majority of abortions in the United States are performed during the first trimester. In 2020, about 93 percent of abortions were performed during the first 13 weeks, according to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
