Maine Democratic Congressman Didn’t Vote In Maine’s Presidential Primary

March 8, 2024

U.S. Representative Jared Golden, a Democrat who has tried to navigate Maine’s largely rural and conservative Second Congressional District, did not vote in his state’s presidential primary this week.

That means he didn’t vote for President Joe Biden, a fellow Democrat and leader of the party.

A spokesman confirmed that Golden didn’t vote in the primary Tuesday, March 5 when asked by The Bangor Daily News, but did not say why he didn’t vote.

Golden, who won the seat in 2018 thanks to the state’s ranked-choice vote-counting scheme against a Republican incumbent who got more first-choice votes than he did, is running for re-election this year against one of two Republican challengers who are Trump supporters.

Former President Donald Trump won a single electoral vote in Maine’s Second Congressional District in 2016 and in 2020.

Both Republican candidates for Golden’s seat, state Representative Austin Theriault (R-Fort Kent) and Mike Soboleski, “have sought to tie Golden to Biden and border security issues,” according to The Bangor Daily News.
