Massachusetts Governor To Attend Mosque Prayer Service

January 29, 2019

Charlie Baker plans to become the first sitting governor of Massachusetts to visit a mosque on Friday.

The governor plans to attend an afternoon prayer service at the Islamic Society of Boston Cultural Center in Roxbury, according to State House News Service.

The mosque is on Malcolm X Boulevard about a half-mile southeast of Mission Church.

About 1,500 people typically attend the 1 p.m. Friday afternoon prayer service, a mosque spokesman told State House New Service.

The governor is expected to sit among the congregants for a 35-minute sermon, observe a prayer, and then speak briefly to the people there.

An imam from the mosque, which is New England’s largest, gave the invocation before Baker’s state-of-the-state address in January 2018.
