Suicide Rate Among Correctional Officers Six Times the Average

November 26, 2018

Fourteen employees of the Massachusetts Department of Corrections killed themselves between 2010 and 2016, according to state officials – a suicide rate about six times the state average.

A state commission is reviewing suicide prevention programs and trying to come up with ways to make mental health services more available to corrections officers, according to the Cape Cod Times.

The commission, created by the criminal justice reform package that Governor Charlie Baker signed in April, is supposed to make recommendations to the state Legislature by December 31.
