Jimmy Tingle’s Run for Lieutenant Governor May Outshine Democratic Nominee for Governor

May 29, 2018

Comedian Jimmy Tingle, who grew up in Cambridge, is one of two candidates running for the Democratic nomination for lieutenant governor of Massachusetts.

His sense of humor and personality may end up overshadowing either of the two Democratic candidates for governor, Jay Gonzalez and Bob Massie, whom Lowell Sun columnist Peter Lucas describes as “about as exciting as watching a two-car funeral.”

Tingle, 63, who has appeared on national television shows as well as in comedy clubs all over the country, grew up the son of a taxi driver near the campus of Harvard College.

He eventually got a master’s in public administration from the country’s oldest university, in 2010, but that wasn’t the big draw when he was a kid.

In his commencement address in 2010, Tingle said:  “By the eighth grade, our whole neighborhood had its eye set on Harvard, not so much for scholarships but because it was an excellent place to steal bicycles.”
