BOSTON — The senior litigation counsel in the Massachusetts U.S. Attorney’s Office has been nominated for the top federal prosecutor job in the state, the White House announced late Friday.

Andrew Lelling has worked for 12 years in the U.S. Attorney’s office, according to the White House.

If confirmed by the U.S. Senate, Lelling would replace Acting U.S. Attorney William Weinreb who took over after Carmen Ortiz resigned in January.

In May the Boston Globe reported that Lelling had been interviewed for the position as had Weinreb and Leah Foley, another prosecutor in the office.

Lelling has worked as a federal prosecutor in the Eastern District of Virginia and was counsel to the assistant attorney general at the Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division, the White House announcement said.

A graduate of State University of New York at Binghamton and the University of Pennsylvania Law School, Lelling clerked for the late Avant Edenfield, who was a federal judge in Georgia.
