The race for a soon-to-open Massachusetts Senate seat in a competitive district got its first official candidate.
State Representative Dylan Fernandes, a four-term Democrat from Falmouth, announced Monday he will run for the Plymouth and Barnstable Senate district set to be vacated next year when incumbent, state Senator Susan Moran (D-Falmouth), makes a bid for a county-level job.
Fernandes said last week he was weighing a Senate run, and he said Monday, December 4 he wants to “bring new energy to the role and legislative experience working to make Massachusetts a more affordable place to live for middle and low income people.”
“The Plymouth & Barnstable seat is my hometown district — I grew up here and love it here. I plan to travel the district to listen to your cares and concerns and learn about how I can help, and you can reach out to me personally anytime at 508-257-1174,” Fernandes said in a written statement.
Fernandes, 33, was first elected to the House in 2016 after topping a four-way Democratic primary and then beating two unenrolled candidates in the general election. He has cruised to re-election three times since then without facing any opponents.
A fellow state representative, Mathew Muratore, a Plymouth Republican, said last week he was “seriously taking a look” at the Senate seat.
Moran plans to run for Barnstable County Superior Court clerk, an elected position with a six-year term, in 2024.
