Biden Nominates Newton Native As Deputy Attorney General

January 7, 2021

A Massachusetts native could end up being the deputy attorney general under President-elect Joe Biden.

The former vice president nominated Lisa Monaco, who was born in Boston and grew up in Newton, to serve in the role. She served as the homeland security advisor to former President Barack Obama from 2013 to 2017, as WCVB points out.

Biden’s pick for attorney general is also a name some may be familiar with:  Merrick Garland. Obama nominated Garland to the U.S. Supreme Court in 2016 following Antonin Scalia’s death, but the Republican-controlled Senate refused to hold a hearing on him since it was an election year. President Donald Trump ended up nominating Neil Gorsuch instead, who is now an associate justice of the U.S. Supreme Court.
