Driver’s Licenses For Illegals Not Popular In Massachusetts, Poll Shows

June 28, 2022

Should illegal immigrants in Massachusetts be able to obtain a driver’s license?

The people of the Commonwealth are divided on the issue, though they tilt against it, according to a recent poll.

There wasn’t strong support for the measure in a UMass Amherst/WCVB poll released last week. It found that 46 percent of respondents oppose the new law that allows illegal immigrants to get driver’s licenses. Meanwhile, 40 percent of Bay Staters support the law, and 14 percent had no opinion of the matter.

The poll results come at a time when a group of Republicans are trying to get a question on the November 2022 ballot that would ask voters to repeal a law allowing illegal immigrants to obtain driver’s licenses, which the Massachusetts Legislature enacted June 9 over the governor’s veto.
